What Is a Mobile Weather Station (Mobile Mesonet)?
A mobile weather station measures weather conditions at the exact location of a vehicle or field team rather than at a fixed site. Mounted on a vehicle, it is often called a mobile mesonet: a set of sensors on a roof mast that records conditions along a route or at each stop. They track everything from temperature and humidity to wind speed, direction, and rainfall.
How Do They Work?
It’s all about smart sensors. A suite of highly accurate sensors automatically gathers meteorological data. This information is then processed by the station and sent over an RS-485 interface (RS-232 on request) to a vehicle computer, data logger or telemetry unit. The built-in GPS adds coordinates to every measurement, so data from a moving vehicle can be placed on a map.
